Pomade vs. Clay vs. Paste: Our Guide to a Great Finish

At Richmond Barbershop, we match your styling product to the shape of your haircut and the finish you love. We carry Prospectors Diamond, Tip Top Clay, Prospectors Coal Mine—our best seller—Suavecito Texturizing Powder, and Prospectors Styling Cream. Here's how we help you choose.

Start with your haircut and your preferred finish

A great haircut gives your style its shape. The right product brings out the details: a clean part, a little lift through the front, or texture that looks relaxed and intentional. We want you to enjoy that finished feeling when you leave our Carytown shop and when you get ready the next morning.

Pomade, clay, and paste describe overlapping product families. A pomade can have shine or a matte finish, and a clay can also be called a paste. We make the choice simpler by focusing on the result you want.

Why we recommend Prospectors Diamond pomade

Diamond earns its place on our shelf because it combines three qualities we value in a polished style: easy application, flexible control, and an attractive sheen. Prospectors describes Diamond as a water-based formula with a creamy texture and medium hold that remains pliable for restyling.

That combination is the advantage we want clients to understand. When your goal is a classic, combed look, choosing the strongest hold on the shelf can miss the point. Diamond gives you control while letting you adjust your hair during the day. Its creamy consistency also makes it approachable when you want a straightforward styling routine.

We recommend it when you want a side part with definition, a swept-back shape, or a pompadour with a polished finish. If a firm, rigid finish is what you dislike about your current pomade, Diamond’s pliability is a meaningful reason to consider switching. Bring your styling questions to us and we can help match that finish to your cut.

Prospectors Coal Mine: our best seller

Coal Mine is our best-selling styling product at Richmond Barbershop. If you love a natural-looking finish with texture, this is an excellent place to start the conversation with us.

Coal Mine is a water-based clay pomade with medium hold and a matte finish. Prospectors explains that warming it between your hands softens it for application. You can work it through with your fingers for a relaxed shape or use a comb for more definition.

The main choice between Diamond and Coal Mine is the look you want: Diamond brings shine to a polished style; Coal Mine keeps the finish matte. We can help you connect that choice to the texture and movement in your haircut.

Tip Top Clay Paste, texture powder, and styling cream

Our Tip Top Clay is Tip Top Clay Paste. It offers medium hold with a natural finish and is designed to create volume and a fuller-looking style. Its water-soluble formula washes out easily. Ask us about it when you want shape and body without a high-shine look.

Suavecito Texturizing Powder takes a different approach. Suavecito specifies a no-shine finish, strong hold, and lightweight volume, making it an option to discuss when you want extra lift and grip. The manufacturer’s directions call for a small amount on dry hair, worked through with your fingers; add gradually as needed.

For softer control, we carry Prospectors Styling Cream. Its water-based formula offers light hold and natural shine, with conditioning benefits and a lightweight feel. We recommend considering it when you want movement and a polished appearance without a strongly held shape. It is also an option to discuss with us for finer hair.

Bring the finished look into your daily routine

During your haircut with us, tell us how you usually get ready. Do you enjoy a precise combed style, or would you rather shape the front with your fingers and head out? That answer helps us connect the cut and the product.

Ask us to explain the amount to use, the starting moisture level, and the direction to work it through. Keep washing and styling simple between visits, and let us maintain the cut, blend, and outline at your next appointment. Quality barbering and a product you enjoy using make a strong combination.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coal Mine a clay or a pomade?

Both: Prospectors calls it a clay pomade. Its medium hold and matte finish are more useful decision points than choosing by the category name alone.

Which product should I choose for a shiny finish?

We recommend discussing Diamond with us. Its sheen and flexible hold suit polished styles, while Coal Mine is the matte option in our Prospectors pomade selection.

Can you help me choose during my haircut?

Absolutely. Tell us the finish you want and what you like or dislike about your current product. We can guide you through the products we carry and help you make the most of your haircut.
